Mike has been self-employed since 1993, and has in that time worked in the following areas:

- Software consultant and reseller on many products, including MYOB, QuickBooks (Intuit NZ), Moneyworks (Cognito Software NZ), Empower (Intersoft NZ), Propella Software (NZ) and Exchequer Enterprise (a mid range system from Exchequer Software, UK).
- Software trainer, running successful courses on products including MYOB, Quickbooks, and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word and Powerpoint), both in New Zealand and overseas
- Custom report writing for MYOB and other systems
- Accounting consultant to Chinese subsidiaries of Australian public company, working in northern China from 1997 to 2007 on audit and management accounting matters.
In August 2006 Mike was recognised as the first "Approved Consultant of the Year" by MYOB NZ Limited, as a reward for his contributions to fellow partners and MYOB users.
